Rwanda to Myanmar – media and incitement to violence
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, UTS Law School and the Centre for Media Transition hosted a public lecture by Ambassador Stephen Rapp and panel discussion including Michael Kirby (former Justice of the High Court of Australia) and Christopher Sidoti (Australian member of the UN Human Rights Council).
Accelerated technological change since the Rwandan genocide has irreversibly altered and globalised mass communication, the role of the media and international criminal law. This event focused on the role of local, traditional media in inciting genocide during the Rwandan genocide in the 1990s to multinational, social media platforms implicated in the plight of the Rohingya in Myanmar today.
Speakers included Ambassador Stephen Rapp, Michael Kirby, Christopher Sidoti and Professor Lesley Hitchens.
