Talk: What does it take for a media startup in the Global South to survive and thrive? Is it possible to do investigative reporting, hold government and big business to account and still break even or become profitable? Is donor dependency the way of the future? Anya Schiffrin will present (for the first time) the findings of a recent Columbia University study on media startups around the world.
Anya Schiffrin (USA) is the director of the media and communications program at Columbia University’s school of International and Public Affairs in New York.
A former business journalist, her interests include investigative journalism, especially in Africa, media entrepreneurship and the evolution of the global news media.
She serves on the board of the Open Society Foundation’s Program on Independent Journalism, and the advisory board of the Natural Resource Governance Institute.
