KTP VF Stories: Thilo Kroll from Dundee University
In April, we welcomed KTP visiting fellow Professor Thilo Kroll from the University of Dundee (opens an external site).
A research psychologist by background, Thilo is the current co-director at the Social Dimensions of Health Institute (SDHI) (opens an external site) at Dundee University. His field of expertise is within health and wellbeing inequalities, the co-production of health and disability related research. His three-week stay at UTS proved to be extremely productive with meetings to discuss collaborative research and possible HDR student exchange opportunities as well as to deliver two presentations to staff and students.
Hosted by Associate Professor Roger Dunston from FASS’s Centre for Research in Learning and Change, Professor Jon Adams from the Faculty of Health and Dr Jason Prior from ISF, the collaborators discussed a proposed joint project on ageing entitled “Transforming People and Places for Health and Wellbeing”. The project aims to assess the challenges encountered on a national and global scale in maintaining and improving the health of individuals, communities and nations. Three program areas of interest have been identified including designing built, natural and social environments for health and wellbeing, addressing inequalities in health and wellbeing, and innovation in health services. The outcomes of the project include producing joint publications on the aforementioned areas; creating a seminar series targeted at UTS and Dundee staff; masters and doctoral students; industry and government bodies; creating a joint PhD program; initiating early career and mid-career researcher exchange; and exploring collaborative grants to fund research activities.
In addition, Thilo’s two presentations, which focused on social dimensions of health and the use of inclusive research methodologies with socially marginalised population groups, were well-received and attended by UTS staff and students.
UTS Professor of Public Health, Jon Adams, emphasised the success of Thilo’s visit through the KTP Visiting Fellow Program.
"Professor Kroll's visit highlighted the many rich and varied synergies across our two universities in the broad fields of health, place and ageing. We are delighted to have had such a fruitful visit to plan a highly translational program able to inform the evidence base across a number of key challenges facing health systems and governments around the world”.
