KTP focus: Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
Established in 1896 by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) (opens an external site) was initially known as the “University of Research”. As its former namesake suggests, IISc is internationally recognised for its excellence in scientific research and the sciences.
In 2013, IISc was ranked 43rd in Chemistry and in the 51-57 bracket for Computer Science by the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU). The Times Higher Education (THE) ranked IISc as first on its 2013 top 10 Institutions in India list.
The University comprises two main faculties: Science and Engineering. The Science faculty includes departments and centres in Biochemistry, Microbiology & Cell Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Ecological Sciences and High Energy Physics. The Engineering faculty includes departments and centres in Aerospace, Engineering, Management Studies, Centre for Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, Electrical Communication, Computer Science & Automation, Centre for Electronic Design Technology, Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing, and Supercomputer Education & Research Centre.
IISc and UTS share common research strengths in many academic fields, including water management, environmental science, biochemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, and automation and ecological sciences.
