Key spaces
While UTS Central's glass-enveloped exterior with its 'rotating' tower makes a striking design statement, the interior spaces are just as unique - and significant for the opportunities they offer to UTS students, staff and partners.
UTS Reading Room
The design of the UTS Reading Room was inspired by traditional scholarly spaces where academics can engage with current research, exchange ideas and immerse themselves in study. With a triple-height atrium opening to a large skylight and an uninterrupted glass façade looking over Alumni Green, this is a light-filled space for quiet work, reading and contemplation.
UTS Blake Library
The UTS Library spans levels 7 to 9, offering a wealth of study and collaboration spaces, including many desks with a view outside or looking into the Reading Room below. Library users have access to north- and south-facing landscaped terraces with informal study areas via level 8. Level 9 is a silent study floor. Two public exhibition spaces, one outside and one inside the Library entrance, showcase staff and student work from across the university.
Large collaborative classrooms
Three cutting-edge large collaborative classrooms incorporate innovative design features that support collaborative learning and teaching at scale. Designed in consultation with academics, the classrooms have no obvious ‘front’ of the room. Multiple presenter spaces and adaptable furniture enhance opportunities for active student participation. The two largest classroms hold up to 350 students, while a third accommodates 198 students.
Hive Superlab
Taking its name from hexagonal design features and a ‘buzzing’ atmosphere, the colourful Hive Superlab is a world-class, collaborative teaching lab. Designed to a PC2-standard, the lab accommodates up to 270 students, with specialist audio-visual facilities (including bone conduction headphones) allowing seven classes to run simultaneously.
Faculty of Law
The new home for the Faculty of Law is located across levels 14 to 16. It accommodates the Dean’s unit and faculty admin, offices for academics, student common areas and will also house the Faculty’s centres: AntiSlavery Australia, the joint UTS-UNSW Australasian Legal Information Institute & the joint Law/ FASS Centre for Media Transition. Law students have access to a new Moot Court and two trial courts, incorporating the modern technology now found in Australian courts, in purpose-designed spaces. Other student areas include breakout spaces, an HDR work zone and the offices of the UTS Law Students’ Society.
Student Learning Hub
The Student Learning Hub offers students advice and guidance on UTS student support services. From financial assistance to careers, assignment help to Library services the Hub will bring support services from across the University campus to this one location when students need them most.

A plastic-free public food court
A dedicated food court gives students, staff and visitors on-campus access to a new range of authentic, diverse, affordable and healthy food options, as well as a vibrant space to eat, study and socialise. Located on level 3, with direct access to the UTS Alumni Green and links to Building 1, the food court features eight individual outlets including a café/restaurant opening to an outdoor terrace. An additional coffee hub outside the UTS Library on level 7 opens later in 2019..
With a world-leading sustainability focus, the food court has eliminated single-use plastics including bags, coffee cups, straws, bottled drinks and packaging. Reusable, fully compostable and recyclable products will be used instead.
Terraces and gardens
North- and south-facing terraces with seating and gardens provide outdoor spaces for study and socialising, accessible through level 8 of the Library.
Semi-enclosed and naturally ventilated ‘winter garden’ balconies with feature planting span levels 9 to 16 on the northern façade.
Student study spaces
UTS Central houses a range of state-of-the-art individual and collaborative study spaces. Student study areas include ‘bring-your-own-device’ benches, general access computers, bean bag pods, group tables, lounges and bookable group study rooms.
