In over 20 years as a senior journalist and foreign correspondent with the ABC, Tim Palmer has become one of the country's most awarded journalists. He has five times received a Walkley award including the coveted Gold Walkley, which he was given for his coverage of Indonesia in the year of the Jakarta embassy bombing and the Boxing Day tsunami. He has also won a Logie and a UN Media Peace Prize for his stories.
From 1999 to 2002 ,Palmer was the ABC's Middle East correspondent based in Jerusalem and Amman. He reported across the region from Lebanon and Syria to Iran and Afghanistan, in particular covering the second Palestinian Intifada, the Afghanistan war and the conflict in Lebanon.
From 2002 to 2006 he was the ABC's Indonesia correspondent. He covered the Bali bombing and the hunt for the bombers through to their convictions. He was the first reporter in the world to enter Aceh after the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, for three days providing the only television coverage of the catastrophe from the devastated province.
His coverage in Australia ranged from exposing police racism to following the Sydney to Hobart fleet. Most recently he reported from Queensland's flooded Lockyer Valley, and from Libya while under fire from Gaddafi loyalists. Tim Palmer, as Executive Producer, has headed of some of the ABC's most significant news and current affairs programs: Media Watch, Lateline, Lateline Business, The World Today and PM.
He currently works as a senior reporter on The 7:30 Report and presents the news panel program, The Drum.
