Seminar: Sport and Korean Immigration in the Age of Globalization
In international collaboration, the Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Research Centre UTS and the School of Physical Education of Daegu University Korea invite researchers and HDR students for a workshop on sport, gender and cultural diversity. The seminar will start with a brief introduction of the program organised by Professor Tracy Taylor (Sport Management, Deputy Dean, UTS), which includes numerous talks from national and international scholars, as well as original research initiatives to expand the field of cultural diversity management in sports.
This will be followed by two presentations:
- Obesity on Body Image Satisfaction and Social Physique Anxiety among Korean Women
- Sport, Identity and Acculturation among Young Koreans in Australia
The workshop will be delivered by:
- Dr Seunghyun Lim is Assistant Professor of Physical Education with focus on obesity, body image satisfaction and social physique anxiety at the Faculty of Social Science and Arts of Daegu University in South Korea. He is a visiting scholar of the Cosmopolitan Civil Society Research Centre, University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) since July 2013. Dr Lim has published 4 chapters in research based books, 59 journal papers in Korean refereed journals and 10 refereed conference proceedings. He wrote the successful application for the $100K government funded Korean Research Foundation. He serves as a member of the Korean Journal of Sport Industry. Among his recent publications: (1) The effect of obesity levels on social physique anxiety and body image satisfaction among Korean female adults
(2) Social physique anxiety and psychological well-being. - Dr Jae Won Kang, PhD in Social Science & Policy from the School of Social Sciences and International Studies at University of New South Wales. He is a journalist and independent researcher. He received the 2012 Best Research Award of the Association for the Studies of Koreans Aboard. Dr Kang has a proven record of developing interdisciplinary research and international industry-academic cooperation. He participated in collaborative research projects as a joint-investigator from the Korean Institute of Sport Science. He is a 7th dan taekwondo black-belt and serves as Member-at-Large of Oceania and Africa of International Association for Taekwondo Research. Dr Kang is a founding member of the World Sports Mission of Australia to build synergies that advance the value and reputation of Korean Church and community sports research nationally and internationally. His current research areas of interest include sport, naturalization and identity.
