How many companies have you started? Were they successful?
I've started four. Had one quick exit, two failures and now Pocketbook.
What is the elevator pitch for your company?
Pocketbook is an application which makes managing your money ridiculously simple. We do this by aggregating a user’s bank accounts, credit cards, loans, rewards programs and providing a single view of their money.
Where did the idea for your company come from?
My co-founder (a friend of mine for 18 years) was trying to do his taxes that he's been putting off for a couple of years. He's a software engineer, so the logical solution is to solve the problem with code. It started there, then everyone wanted it (including me).
Has anyone in particular influenced your philosophy on how to run your business?
My first boss - I started my career working at a startup consulting firm. Two lessons - 1) always be selling, even when unsure, 2) always be nice to competitors - Australia is too small, and competitors can become partners and customers.
Do you have any practical advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
It's a really hard life, so you need to build your support network - emotionally and financially. Then believe in yourself, but try to be rational.
