Computing Unit
The Computing Unit is located on level 3 of the Peter Johnson Building (Building 6). This teaching space is for DAB student access only with specialised software and hardware specific to DAB needs found here.
The Computing Unit comprises 6 teaching rooms and a number of general access machines and space for laptop users. All machines run Mac OS X and Windows, you can select which when the machine starts up. You are expected to vacate the teaching spaces if a class is commencing.
General access machines can be used as much as you desire. The facilities are designed to be a resource for your learning and it is expected you will restrict yourself to such uses. Each room has some flatbed scanners available.
General UTS labs are available in building 1 [Tower], 2, 5 [Market campus], 10 and at the library. No food or drinks are to be consumed in any computing lab area.
Planning to use your own laptop? Learn more about laptops recommended for studying at DAB.
File storage
Students are responsible for storing and backing up their own files. Each computer has a space called “Student Work” where files can be stored and a network volume called “public” where you can transfer files from one computer to another.
Both storage areas are volatile, everyone can access and delete files, and they do. Do not store the only copy of your assignment in either place.
All the computers in the Computing Unit have USB and Firewire connectors for external storage devices. The Computing Unit generally recommends USB memory devices.
IT support
There are support staff in the offices on the mezzanine level that you can ask for help with technical issues. The support staff are not there to teach you how to use software.
There will usually be at least one person available between 9 and 5 on weekdays. If you notice a broken or defective machine please report it to one of the support staff.
DAB workshop spaces & studios
DAB workshop spaces and studios are available to all DAB students and staff who have completed the relevant induction programs.
