There are so many applications that use maths to help make complex decisions on quantitative basis...
What are you majoring in?
Mathematics and Civil and Environmental Engineering
What motivated you to study this degree/major?
I initially enrolled in a Civil and Environmental Engineering degree, but I also enjoyed mathematics in high school that I couldn't imagine only doing maths as a subjects, so I added on a second degree.
What do you enjoy most about your degree?
I never realised how many different specialties in maths existed, and as I've moved through my degree I've been able to choose options that focus on what I'm interested in - quantitative management. This area uses maths to provide a quantitative basis for making complex decisions, and has applications including scheduling, transportation and creating financial portfolios. I like that we are learning about how maths can be applied to the real world to optimise everyday problems.
Why did you choose to study at UTS?
After visiting UTS on Open Day, I realised that the quality of a university campus is more than just how it looks from the outside. The group study areas and modern lecture rooms set it apart from other universities. I also chose UTS because it is centrally located and has flexible timetables, which is useful for me as I work part time.
What is it like to study at UTS Science?
Studying at university is completely different to high school. How well you do is completely up to you. At the same time, everyone in class has chosen to be there so the learning environment is much better.
What would you like to do once you complete by your degree?
I would like to look at engineering applications of the maths I have learnt, such as construction project scheduling, public transport scheduling, and infrastructure planning.
What other activities do you participate at uni?
Outside of uni I work part time two days a week, and also work casually at UTS Open Days and Careers fairs. I also play soccer for UTS on weekends, and represented UTS at both the Eastern and Australian University Games this year.
