What degree are you studying?
Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (This degree is very similar to the Bachelor of Biotechnology)
What motivated you to study this degree/major?
I loved the chemistry subjects in my first year at uni. The practical component and the lab classes were really fun and informal. The technical staff and my classmates were attentive and helpful, so it made learning a lot more fun and enjoyable.
In biotechnology, we learn how to use micro-organisms to create products that we want, and how to improve the efficiency of processes. Biotechnology processes can be used to make food products like bread and beer or pharmaceutical products such as hormones, antibiotics and vaccines. I found molecular biology and biochemistry subjects interesting because I could learn a lot about genetics, proteins and how the biological systems work, which relates back to my course.
What is it like to study at UTS Science?
Two of the best things about studying science at UTS are the relaxed vibe of the laboratory classes, and the accessibility to lecturers and tutors. UTS is one of the best choice to study biotechnology, as it is well known in teaching knowledge that is relevant to the real world. It is also located in the city, which is convenient for me and lots of transport options - trains, buses, trams and just walk if you live around the city.
Lecturers and tutors are also open-minded and helpful. If I have a glitch, I can approach them and discuss it with them either before or after the lecture or lab sessions, or make an appointment to meet them in the office to run through the problem.
Another thing I like about my course is the field trips to biotechnology firms and companies. During my second and third year, we went on numerous field trips to commercial biotechnology firms, such as a brewing company, sewage treatment plant, yeast manufacturing company and a vaccine manufacturing company. These field trips were really good opportunities for students to see how biotechnology firms operate on an industrial level and how products are actually made at that scale.
What advice would you give a student thinking of studying this degree?
My advice to future students is a career in science requires determination and lots of hard work. If you possess these characteristics you will definitely succeed in science.
