UTS earns five awards at Engineering Australia ceremony
Sydney’s most innovative engineers and engineering projects have been named at the 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards.
Engineers Australia has awarded the UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT five awards at the 2024 NSW Engineers Australia Awards, including ‘Engineer of the Year’ and ‘Student of the Year’.
The NSW Engineers Australia Awards honours engineers' incredible innovations and societal achievements, celebrating both individuals and projects.
By acknowledging their work, we offer a platform for them to inspire future talent and reinforce the importance of engineering in building a better future.

Civil College Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year (National Award)
Distinguished Professor Buddhima Indraratna AM
Professor Indraratna AM is leading the world in developing sustainable engineering solutions for railway design. As the director of the University of Technology Sydney’s Transport Research Centre, Professor Indraratna’s research has improved the safety, efficiency and sustainability of critical infrastructure projects around the world. With an extensive publication record and mentorship of over 150 postgraduate students, Professor Indraratna AM has made a significant impact on both academia and industry.
Environmental College Environmental Engineer Achievement Award
Professor Qilin Wang
Professor Wang has been recognised for his efforts in engineering and environmental sustainability. An award-winning mentor and educator, Professor Wang is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in engineering, and has made significant contributions to the engineering profession and environmental stewardship.
Mechanical College AGM Michell Medal
Professor David Eager
Professor David Eager is an internationally renowned expert on the safety of playgrounds, trampolines and sports equipment. His innovation in portable impact test rigs, his commitment to public safety, and his contributions to mechanical engineering have been recognised by Engineers Australia.
Transport Australia Society Transport Medal
Dr Michelle Zeibots
Dr Michelle Zeibots has been recognised for her substantial contributions to sustainable transport planning and advocacy, including her work on the Sydney Airport Rail Link and Inner West Light Rail. Dr Zeibot’s research, consultancy work and teaching have transformed transport engineering education.
Engineers Australia Student of the Year
Kyle Jewiss
Kyle Jewiss is a graduate of UTS, where he completed a Bachelor of Engineering and a Diploma in Professional Practice in Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. Kyle currently works as a graduate robotics engineer at Greenroom Robotics.
The 2024 NSW Engineers Australia Award winners will now go on to represent their division in the national awards in November.
