UTS Sustainability has launched a program on the energy transition for households with inhouse energy expert Jonathan Prendergast. The program includes an introductory event as well as specific topic webinars, drop in sessions, and access to resources to help you navigate your way to enjoying energy efficient homes powered by renewable energy.
Household Energy Transition
A decade ago the main way to go green at home was to buy Greenpower. Now with solar, battery storage, heat pumps and EVs becoming mainstream, our homes are at the centre of the transition to renewable energy and the ditching of fossil fuels.
However, it can be difficult for households to undertake their own research on solar power providers, battery options, heat pump purchasing and EV charging. So UTS is here to help!

About the presenter Jonathan Prendergast
Jonathan has been part of UTS for over 11 years now, helping to develop and deliver many of UTS’s major innovative sustainability projects. This includes Australia’s first offsite solar power purchase agreement, first District Cooling connection and our innovative recycled water supply contract from Central Park, all at UTS! In his role as Project Manager Green Infrastructure, he helps UTS reduce energy and water use and achieve emissions and cost reductions through innovative projects like rooftop solar, power purchase agreements, demand respond and battery storage projects.
Outside UTS Jonathan also has several roles developing innovative projects. This includes helping Corporate Australia undertake solar and wind PPAs as Technical Director of Business Renewables Centre; financing community solar projects and other advisory and consulting roles.
Home Electrification in the Sutherland Shire
Jonathan has also built up expertise and experience in home electrification. In 2019 he launched a community energy group, Sunny Shire, to perform rooftop solar bulk buys for the Sutherland Shire community. This helps hundreds of shire families get high quality value for money solar from reputable local solar companies, avoiding some of the pitfalls. He helps provide the community advice on solar, home batteries, hot water heat pumps and other home electrification matters, and is excited we now have the tools to play a meaningful role at home in the transition to renewable energy.
