Brennan Program Handbook
Each year, the Brennan administrators update the Brennan Program Handbook. This document is a source of truth for all Brennan members to learn about the Brennan Program. In this handbook, you will learn about what an LTS opportunity is; how to submit ROJ forms; and what external events or materials are suitable for accruing ROJ in the Brennan Program.

hi everyone um my name is georgina and
00:03
this is mac
00:04
and we are the 2021 brennan directors
00:07
and we're here today to just run through
00:10
a little bit about
00:11
our very new exciting brennan website
00:14
so you can access this brennan web page
00:16
um from a few places there'll be a link
00:19
on the brennan collective
00:20
on the uts brennan program webpage
00:24
and also you'll receive a link to this
00:26
when you sign up for the brennan program
00:28
so
00:28
it would be a really good idea to
00:30
bookmark this
00:31
through your journey through the program
00:33
so we're going to run through all of the
00:35
different components of this webpage
00:38
um today so i will start so this is what
00:41
the website looks like when you first
00:42
come on and if you scroll down
00:44
you've got this big tile here which will
00:46
take you um
00:47
to another web page that is your own
00:50
personal
00:52
uh brennan workflow which shows your own
00:54
roj and lts claims and allows you
00:57
to make any um more claims yourself so
01:00
this will be a great place if you can't
01:01
figure out where to go to to make your
01:03
roj or lts claims
01:05
you can click straight on here and um it
01:07
will take you
01:08
straight to your own personal workflow
01:10
so it's a really nice easy
01:12
quick place to find that then if we
01:14
scroll down we've got a number of
01:16
smaller little tiles that um have a
01:19
bunch of different resources to help you
01:20
all
01:21
out in your brennan journey so the first
01:24
little tile on the left here is
01:26
a really great video from one of our
01:27
brennanites jenny
01:29
explaining the process of how to claim
01:31
for lts and roj
01:33
um so it's a really good quick little
01:35
video for you to understand
01:37
how to claim those hours or the points
01:40
for roj
01:41
and all what all of the little different
01:42
things on the workflow mean
01:44
so if you're ever having any problems
01:46
with that you could watch that video
01:48
um going into the middle tile on the top
01:50
row we've got our brennan handbook
01:52
which is a really really fantastic
01:55
resource that explains all of the
01:56
smaller details of the program all in
01:59
one place
02:00
so if you ever have any more like
02:01
specific questions
02:03
um this will be a great place to go and
02:05
it's a really nice quick easy link
02:07
to find that there and then on the final
02:10
one on the top row
02:11
it's this is a little timeline of all
02:13
the events that we'll be running in
02:15
um any said semester so obviously you
02:18
can say these are our spring 2021
02:20
initiatives but whatever semester you
02:22
might be viewing from
02:24
you should be able to see all of the
02:25
initiatives on here and be able to
02:27
register for them
02:28
so that's a really great place if you
02:29
want to see what we're doing that
02:31
semester in the brennan program
02:33
this is a really nice quick and easy
02:35
place to access them
02:37
so now mac's going to run you through um
02:40
all the rest of the tiles on the page
02:45
thanks georgina and hi everyone i hope
02:48
you're all doing really well
02:50
so these next few tiles um
02:53
the one on the left there leadership for
02:55
service essentially
02:57
if you click on that link that will take
02:59
you through to
03:01
a little bit more information about the
03:04
types of
03:05
volunteering opportunities
03:09
you can undertake at uts and also
03:12
a few examples of what students are
03:14
doing so
03:16
from working for anti-slavery australia
03:20
to the wesley mission there's a whole
03:23
list of resources there that students
03:25
have been
03:27
engaging with and if you're ever stuck
03:30
with
03:30
what sort of volunteering experience
03:32
might be good for you definitely take a
03:34
look at that one
03:35
and next to that we've got reflections
03:37
on justice so
03:39
this will give you a little bit more
03:40
information about the types of
03:43
activities that we run at uts where you
03:45
can earn roj
03:46
points that could be anything from
03:49
the discussion groups we run each
03:52
semester
03:53
our justice talks and both of those
03:57
tiles they're the leadership free
03:58
service
03:59
and the reflections on justice they also
04:02
have some
04:03
videos that show you how to claim
04:06
lts hours and roj points
04:10
by the career hub so if you're ever
04:14
stuck on how to claim make sure you
04:16
check out both of those tiles
04:18
and next to that one there we've got the
04:21
brennan collective tile so that will
04:23
take you straight through to
04:25
our facebook page and i would highly
04:28
encourage
04:28
all of you to join that facebook group
04:31
if you haven't already
04:32
georgina and myself will always be
04:35
posting
04:36
new opportunities on there both for
04:39
roj and lts
04:42
points so make sure you're following
04:44
that one
04:45
and we get some great posts from our
04:48
brennan community as well
04:51
and just down from there we've got a few
04:52
more tiles so that one on the left
04:55
program fa
05:00
throughout the year we get lots of
05:01
frequently asked questions
05:03
in our inbox and our lovely coordinator
05:07
crystal she's put together
05:08
a really extensive list of q a
05:12
answers in that link there so if you
05:16
ever have
05:16
a question about the program it's most
05:19
probably in there
05:21
but if it's not you can click on the
05:23
tile next to that so that's the contact
05:26
contact us now tile so if you've ever
05:29
got any questions about the program that
05:31
might not be in the
05:33
frequently asked questions uh tile
05:36
then you can reach us there via email
05:40
and yeah i think that gives a really
05:42
nice summary of our new
05:44
uh page and i hope that
05:47
this will alleviate any of the any of
05:50
the questions you may have about the
05:52
program
05:54
and yeah i hope to see you on campus
06:00
soon

Eyes on the Brennan Award?
The below video offers advice from previous Brennan students about how they accomplished the Brennan award.
1
00:00:05,435 --> 00:00:09,599
My advice to students who want to do
the Brennan Award is just to do it.
2
00:00:09,600 --> 00:00:12,771
It's unique to UTS and
no other university offers it,
3
00:00:12,772 --> 00:00:16,021
and it definitely helps
you grow as a person,
4
00:00:16,022 --> 00:00:18,779
but also develop
connections and communities,
5
00:00:18,780 --> 00:00:21,607
and that's something that
you cannot get anywhere else.
6
00:00:21,608 --> 00:00:24,451
I would say to dive in and participate,
7
00:00:24,452 --> 00:00:27,928
get started from the get-go,
and do as much as you can.
8
00:00:27,929 --> 00:00:30,531
It's not always possible
to attend all the events,
9
00:00:30,532 --> 00:00:33,407
but just show up where
you can and participate.
10
00:00:34,071 --> 00:00:37,456
So, diversity is really important
in accomplishing the Brennan Award,
11
00:00:37,457 --> 00:00:40,988
because the experiences that you
gain while doing the Brennan Award
12
00:00:40,989 --> 00:00:44,559
are invaluable for your future
personal and professional career.
13
00:00:44,560 --> 00:00:48,067
So, making sure that you're not
just doing the one same activity
14
00:00:48,068 --> 00:00:51,238
will ensure that you have greater
knowledge and greater experience,
15
00:00:51,239 --> 00:00:54,137
about what is available in
the social justice side of the law.
16
00:00:54,138 --> 00:00:57,082
So like most things in life,
getting started is the hardest part.
17
00:00:57,083 --> 00:00:58,894
So if you really want to
seek out the Brennan Award,
18
00:00:58,895 --> 00:01:01,520
I recommend finding a friend
and just going to an event.
Brennan Award tips from UTS Law students
Overcoming challenges? Learn how Keti Bull, Tibike Jurecska, Dhruv Saggar, and Alexander Leal Smith, managed their progress through to the end of the Brennan program.
1
00:00:05,546 --> 00:00:07,851
The most difficult part of
the Brennan Program that I felt
2
00:00:07,852 --> 00:00:10,430
was keeping on top of it during exams.
3
00:00:10,431 --> 00:00:12,571
Sometimes you can be
drowning in assignments,
4
00:00:12,572 --> 00:00:15,517
but through doing this,
I learned to prioritise.
5
00:00:15,518 --> 00:00:18,736
The most difficult part was dealing
with really confronting issues.
6
00:00:18,737 --> 00:00:21,463
There were various different
topics that we worked through.
7
00:00:21,464 --> 00:00:24,628
At times I felt really
disheartened and sad,
8
00:00:24,629 --> 00:00:26,143
I felt angry as well.
9
00:00:26,144 --> 00:00:30,049
So it was just a matter of stepping away
from it for a while and recognising that
10
00:00:30,050 --> 00:00:32,526
even though I couldn't
immediately create change,
11
00:00:32,527 --> 00:00:34,097
the change that I'd like to see,
12
00:00:34,098 --> 00:00:35,777
it was just important to sort of start
13
00:00:35,778 --> 00:00:38,184
from a place of
understanding and knowledge,
14
00:00:38,185 --> 00:00:40,130
and I think that's the best place to be.
15
00:00:40,364 --> 00:00:44,317
Well, honestly, I think the most
difficult part of the Program was time.
16
00:00:44,318 --> 00:00:47,824
But I think how I really got around that
and committed myself to doing the Program,
17
00:00:47,825 --> 00:00:50,383
was actually breaking it
down into different parts.
18
00:00:50,384 --> 00:00:52,266
So, for me it was,
19
00:00:52,267 --> 00:00:53,860
I was doing a five-year degree,
so I thought,
20
00:00:53,861 --> 00:00:57,016
"Okay, what do I have to do in my first,
second, third, fourth and fifth year?"
21
00:00:57,017 --> 00:00:58,845
And from there, it just
seemed much more manageable
22
00:00:58,846 --> 00:01:02,478
and I got the confidence to actually
go out there and do some volunteering
23
00:01:02,479 --> 00:01:05,369
and try and strive
for the award that way.
24
00:01:06,025 --> 00:01:09,119
Coming to the end of the Brennan Program,
it was a welcome surprise
25
00:01:09,120 --> 00:01:12,025
that I was able to more
proficiently organise my time
26
00:01:12,026 --> 00:01:14,179
and prioritise tasks as a law student.
