Choosing a degree to make social impact
Liv was initially concerned about her chances of gaining admission into UTS. “I was worried, as all I wanted to do was go to UTS”. Her anxiety shifted when she came across the UTS Early Entry Program. “I knew it was an entry path that really suited me as I had done well in year 11.”
Liv's passion for creating a positive impact on the future can be seen in her portfolio. One of her notable creations was a solar powered hearing aid, highlighting her commitment to sustainable solutions. Additionally, Liv had also undertaken extensive research on hearing loss in Indigenous communities throughout Australia. Her 10,000 word thesis showcased another area where the transformative effects of renewable energy can improve the lives of individuals with hearing impairments.
Immediately after receiving her acceptance email, Liv took her student ID photo and “enabled access to my UTS email and all the resources at UTS – I was so excited”. The sense of belonging and anticipation for the experiences that lay ahead fuelled her enthusiasm.
Liv has become the electrical director of the Motorsports Team. “It is fantastic. You get to work on so many hands on projects – we make an electric car and then go and race it in Victoria”. She emphasises the practical focus of UTS, saying that it is an ideal learning environment.
I’ve received so much practical experience – the classes UTS are very practically focused; it’s a great way to learn, that is one of my favourite things about the university.
Liv's advice for making the most of your UTS journey
Be involved in extracurricular activities. You learn so much through these activities and get to apply your skills and practice.
Liv underscores the importance of giving it your all when applying for the UTS Early Entry Program. She says to, “do the best you can and to include things you do outside of school” and to never, “doubt yourself or let anyone take the spotlight away from you”.
As Liv continues her journey at UTS, she remains dedicated to her vision of shaping a brighter future.
UTS’s Edge Early Entry program is designed to recognise students who have achieved strong year 11 results in STEM subjects. Current school leavers can submit their Year 11 results in exchange for an early offer into UTS Engineering or IT before the HSC commences.
