Genetic Algorithms: Fundamentals, Advances, Applications and Open Problems
Optimization is the art of selecting "the best" alternative among a given set of options. Optimization problems arise in almost all fields of science, engineering, finance and Industry – in fact, in all walks of human activity in which the problem may be mathematically modelled. The traditional optimization techniques are unable to tackle the complexities of real-world optimization problems. Recently, several nature inspired optimization techniques (NIOT) are being developed and proposed in the research literature. They are gaining popularity and are considered efficient due to their ability to find a reasonably acceptable solution within a fair amount of computational time. Genetic Algorithms are well known search and optimization techniques which find numerous applications to solve “difficult” real life problems. This talk will focus on the fundamentals, implementation, advances and challenges of Genetic Algorithms. Several examples will be discussed, and exercises will be provided to the audience. Numerous research topics and challenges will also be presented.
