Leading in Local Government Microcredential
This Leading in Local Government microcredential is designed to build your leadership capacity and capability to be a purposeful, inclusive leader who can lead for impact. This leadership course is grounded in local government context and based on evidence and rigour, drawing on cutting edge leadership theory and practices.

This Leading in Local Government microcredential aligns with a six (6) credit point subject 15610 Leading in Local Government from within the Graduate Certificate in Local Government, Graduate Diploma in Local Government and the UTS MBA Local Government Leadership sub-major.
This microcredential may also qualify as recognition of prior learning at this and other institutions.

This Leading in Local Government microcredential is designed for public sector professionals who want to develop personal and professional leadership capabilities in management positions. The courses is suitable for those who:
- hold (or are about to take up) a supervisory or management position
- aspire to a more senior and/or broader leadership role
- want to develop personal leadership effectiveness
- seek career progression.

Course content
Leading in Uncertainty
This module explores the context of change, how to lead in times of crisis, leadership challenges, mindsets and personal & professional values
Leading in Local Government
This module explores the role of local government in the broader political and social context, the principles and practices of local government (incl history, role & importance), the role of self and purpose in this structure.
Leading for Impact
This module explores mission and vision and the role of collective and collaborative leadership, shared values and leadership impact through the lens of management theory and structures.
Leading with Strategy
The central role of strategy and purpose and creating high impact ways of working is the focus of this module.
Leading to Empower
This module explores relational leadership and how to lead with influence, empathy, the importance of communication, innovative ways of thinking, being and doing, self-reflection through the lens of management theories and structures.
Course learning objectives
As a result of this local government microcredential program, you will:
- grow in confidence to lead in uncertainty and through change
- understand and grow their leadership impact
- actively contribute to the development of collective and collaborative leadership within the council
- have a deeper understanding of the principles and practice of local government and how it has evolved over time
- develop an understanding of management theory and structures
- develop the skills of strategic leadership
- learn a suite of strategies to empower others to achieve.
Course delivery
This microcredential course will be delivered as an interactive workshop consisting of an instructor-led lecture, group and individual activities. This training approach allows you to work through concepts introduced by the trainer in an application-focused teaching environment. You will challenge your understanding of the concepts and consider their application once back in their individual workplace.
Assessment
Assessment one (individual) – weighting 40%
Assessment one will require you to research an area of leadership interest within your council and present your findings as a case study example for leadership in local government.
Assessment two (individual) – weighting 60%
This assignment is designed for you to demonstrate what you have learned about
leading strategically and with purpose and creating high impact ways of leading.
About the presenter
Sophi Bruce specialises in approaches to leadership, transition and social impact projects using a portfolio of techniques for reflective learning, collaborative working and thinking differently. From the design and delivery of bespoke learning programs to ongoing project delivery, Sophi's focus on positive tangible outcomes is supported by professional aptitude and a passion for facilitating personal, organisational and social progress.
Sophi is an authorised assessor of the Leadership Development Framework and has an executive certificate in Positive Psychology coaching. She has curated for the International Association for Public Participation and contributes to Adaptive Leadership Australia's leadership programs and The School of Life classes.
