Being an Ally to First Nations people

The leadup the the referendum may be a difficult time for First Nations peoples.

How can non-Indigenous Australians stand together and show support for those who bear the brunt of this public discussion? What does being an ally to First Nations peoples look like?

  • Listening, without passing judgement. 

  • Committing to develop the knowledge, tools, and skills to take action against racism. 

  • Working within your sphere of influence to create meaningful change towards dismantling systemic racism. 

  • Speaking up if you see any actions that make you feel unsafe. 

  • Engaging in truth-telling – in your workplace, your local community, the wider Australian community and in your personal circles.

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the Boorooberongal people of the Dharug Nation, the Bidiagal people and the Gamaygal people, upon whose ancestral lands our university stands. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
