Which degree are you studying? What year are you in? 3rd year, Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Media Arts and Production)/Bachelor of Laws
What led you to choose UTS for your studies in Law? UTS:Law has been ranked as one of the top law schools in Sydney. After going through a list of available institutions in Sydney, I came to learn that UTS:Law places emphasis on practical experience, which I consider a priority in terms of future career prospects.
What influenced your decision? My decision was mainly based on my career aspirations. This course enables me to pursue the two industries that I am most passionate about. You always have to follow your heart but also make sure that you are ready to dedicate yourself to the challenges ahead.
How have your studies at UTS helped you in finding a career path? UTS has provided me with knowledge and experience in a variety of fields. Within my double degree, I have been exposed to two different industries and working environments. Within the double degree, the faculties provide countless opportunities in addition to the tools and skills needed to succeed in the respective fields.
Are you working while studying? How do you manage the competing demands of university and work? Yes, I work part-time at the UTS Union. It becomes very challenging at times but the key is to keep a good balance between your studies, working and any extra-curricular activities you are involved with. And to me the choice of part-time job is very important. We should do what we enjoy.
How has your learning experience at UTS prepared you for your career? UTS not only provides the knowledge and skills within the classroom but also a wide range of extracurricular activities that allow you to grow as a leader, as a team member and also as a professional.
What sets UTS students apart in your field? UTS:Law students are extremely diverse, maintaining a good balance between their studies, working and extracurricular activities. The UTS Law Students’ Society is a prime example of the dedication and passion of law students.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? The most rewarding aspect of my degree is the incredible opportunities that UTS provides for its students, not only academically, but also in other areas including leadership. These opportunities emerge from the high quality education for which UTS is renowned.
What sort of work do you hope to be doing after you graduate? The various opportunities UTS has provided me with have broadened my career prospects. I hope to combine the skills that I have learned over the past few years and use them within the public sector. Of course I still have a few years to go and this could change.
What is the most useful thing you have learned from your degree so far? The most useful thing I have learned from my degree has certainly been finding the perfect balance between perfecting my academic skill and working. In addition, being a part of various programs and societies at UTS has assisted me in developing time management skills.
Has anyone in particular at the University had a significant influence on your studies? I would like to acknowledge many academic staff at UTS. In particular, Professor Tony Moon has been a significant influence on my studies. He supports my academic work and also the various activities I engage with at UTS.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS? I would most definitely recommend them to study at UTS! I believe it is important to look at what you would like to be, the kind of work you would like to pursue and what you love doing. UTS provides students with the academic framework and also the various opportunities that allow you to develop in a wide variety of contexts.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience at UTS:Law, or the University as a whole? The University provides so many diverse programs and opportunities. If you would like to travel abroad and develop leadership skills, or love volunteering, UTS offers outstanding opportunities to develop your academic and extracurricular profile.
