As a university with a commitment to social justice, UTS supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its implementation in full.
UTS position
We acknowledge that there is a diversity of views and opinions on the upcoming referendum on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. UTS is a place where different views can coexist, and respectful discussion and debate can occur.
Our position is guided by three principles:
That UTS has a long-standing commitment to supporting the right to self-determination including the right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to effective participation in matters that affect them.
That participation in the upcoming referendum is a democratic right and responsibility of all Australian citizens.
That UTS will support and promote a safe, respectful space for the discussion of the issues raised by the referendum for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, recognising the additional cultural load that Indigenous Australians may bear and taking proactive action to reduce the psychosocial threat to the safety and wellbeing of our staff, students, and visitors at this time.
We are providing opportunities for our staff and students to participate in meaningful discussions and explore the nature of this constitutional amendment, so that they can make a decision informed by an understanding of history and current issues.
