Decarbonising Australia Business Summit - Partnering with Japan on the Transition to Net Zero
Making Australia a Green Superpower
UTS Flagship International Event
Co-hosted by Austrade Japan and the University of Technology Sydney
Supported by NSW Government, Invest NSW, and AJBCC
The Australian Federal Government is on a mission to make energy cleaner, greener, more affordable and more secure.
Decarbonisation is a key part of the national strategy to fight the climate crisis. It enables industries to transition to clean and sustainable production processes, thus delivering targeted emissions cuts. It also enables governments to secure national economies while combating climate change.
Well-conceived decarbonisation policies and programs are imperative to the future of Australia’s national economy – for businesses, government departments, industry groups, and the community. If done right, Australia will meet emissions target reductions of 43% and will provide opportunities and solutions to other nations looking for safe and green energy production, and carbon capture and storage options.
On 26-28 July, a major bilateral decarbonisation summit between Japan and Australia is being held in Sydney.
Co-hosted by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), the 'Decarbonising Australia Business Summit: Partnering with Japan on the Transition to Net Zero' will bring together 350 of the largest Japanese and Australian companies and industry groups to meet with government officials and leading researchers to further discussion and action around decarbonisation.
In examining the most effective national and international partnerships that can be established between industry, government and research groups, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, says that “collective effort and determination across all of the economy” is now required.
DAY 1 (26 July at UTS)
Day 1 will provide top level presentations from Federal and State government officials and leading industry groups. The following types of topics will be explored:
- The Australian Federal Government’s Clean Energy Policy including the Safeguard Mechanism, designed specifically to address emissions reductions at Australia’s largest industrial facilities.
- Details of the Guarantee of Origin Scheme and how it will facilitate trade with Japan.
- Plans for the identified renewable energy industrial zones throughout Australia and associated renewable energy infrastructure.
- London Maritime Protocol for offshore Carbon Capture Storage processes (latest developments in Australia’s negotiations).
- Sustainable aviation fuel production processes.
- New Australian funding arrangements to ensure delivery of decarbonisation projects, such as the $15billion Australian National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) and the $400million Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) Funding.
- The UTS led research – industry partnership delivering a beer brewing process with neutral carbon emissions, featuring a dialogue between leading UTS scientist, Peter Ralph, and successful Sydney brewer, Richard Adamson, from Young Henrys.
- Green financing - the risks and benefits of creating green and sustainable loan and bond portfolios, and developing green financial regulatory systems nationally and internationally.
- Green steel production processes.
- Green hydrogen and green ammonia energy production processes.
DAY 2 (27 July at UTS)
Day 2 will involve private meetings and F2F workshops between 150 Japanese industry groups and their Australian counterparts. The goal will be to identify collaborative projects addressing climate change that can be delivered between Australia and Japan.
DAY 3 (28 July around Australia)
Day 3 will be composed of site visits around Australia for Japanese delegates only.
Please note - the Decarbonising Summit is by invitation only
