A flagship event like no other
At UTS, we recognise that the world faces many challenges. In this special event, we show that UTS is ready to grapple with the ‘Big Issues’ to build a better tomorrow. Cricket, Collaboration, and Commonwealth brings together leading figures from Government, University, Cricket Australia and the Private Sector to examine the important relationship between diplomacy, sport, economic development, regional security and equity.
The event takes place in New Delhi, enabling us to highlight the common bonds of language, multi-cultural and democratic foundations, and a shared passion for cricket that unite Australia and India.

The event will be opened by Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Sarah Storey, and Deputy Director (UTS International) , Mychel Palamountain, with a message from UTS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Parfitt, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Enterprise, Glenn Wightwick.

Keynote: A New Dawn for Australia-Indian Economic Relations
In this keynote address, UTS Professor Tim Harcourt will examine significant recent advances in the Australian-Indian economic relationship, outlining current geo-political and economic trends that point to future scenarios impacting both nations and the region. Topics of examination:
· Changing Geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific – The importance of the Australian-Indian partnership;
· A New Economic Force - The rise of India as an economic super power;
· Rocks and Crops – Australia’s expertise in agriculture, agribusiness, agtech and mining and mining services and increasing bilateral opportunities;
· Services – Indian’s burgeoning professional services economy and investment and co-operation opportunities for Australia;
· Education – India’s young population (50 per cent of Indian people are under 25), the demand for education and opportunities for Australian education providers;
· Cricket, Collaboration and Commonwealth – The economic impact of sports diplomacy and rise of and influence of the IPL and now the Women’s IPL

Tim Harcourt (Industry Professor and Chief Economist at UTS)
Session 1: Collaborations Changing the World
A distinguished panel of leading UTS researchers from Economics, Engineering, Information Technology, Science, Mathematics, Design, Law, and Business Studies will probe challenges of climate change, geopolitics, regional security and other collaborative solutions to advance the world of tomorrow.

James Brown (Professor, Statistics) is Professor of Official Statistics at UTS in the School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences within the Faculty of Science. James applies statistical analysis within a wide range of fields including health and health care, disease and disease management, and is an internationally recognised expert in the field of population census coverage estimation.
Gerhard Hambusch (Associate Professor, Finance) is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Business School at UTS. His areas of expertise are corporate finance, responsible investment, and ethics and codes of conduct underpinning financial systems regulation within national and international frameworks.
Willa Huston (Professor and Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, Science) is a molecular microbiologist with a world-class reputation in the field of sexually transmitted infections. She is also a committed educator, with research and academic development outcomes in higher education teaching and learning in science.
Susie Khamis (Associate Dean of International in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) is a social scientist with a specialisation in consumer culture and the impact of brands and brand- awareness on society.
Steven Langford (Professor and Head of School, Mathematical and Physical Sciences) is a highly achieved organic chemist, using concepts from nature to build functional materials for diverse uses including in materials science, optoelectronics and medicinal chemistry.
Grace Li (International, Associate Dean) is an Associate Professor at the UTS in the Faculty of Law. She is an active researcher conducting in the fields of law and telecommunications policy, and corporate law. She has a particular interest in internationalisation of legal education.
Priyadarsi Nanda (Course Director of the Cybersecurity Program) is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology with three decades of experience specialising in research and development of Cybersecurity, IoT security, Internet Traffic Engineering, and wireless sensor network security .
Mukesh Ray (Lecturer Urban Planning & The Built Environment) is an architect and urban planner by profession and lecturer of urban analytics and spatial analysis within the Faculty of Design, Architecture & Building at UTS. He specialises in the application of computational geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing for large scale urban growth modelling, environmental assessment and energy.
Nabin Sharma (Associate Professor, Computer Science) is the Co-Director of the Intelligent Drone Lab and the Director of Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence and the Master of Artificial Intelligence courses in the UTS Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology. His areas of expertise include artificial intelligence and its subset category of machine learning. Nabin is also the Chief-Investigator and technical lead for multiple AI-based award winning industry funded projects at UTS.
Tim Harcourt (Session Q&A Host) is a UTS Industry Professor specialising in Australia’s economic engagement with the Global Economy particularly Asia, Latin America and Emerging Markets and has worked in both public policy and research roles in International Trade, Labour Markets, Climate Innovation and the Economics of Sport. He is the former Chief Economist of the Australian Trade Commission
Session 2: In Conversation with Cricket Legends
In this special dinner panel, cricketers Lisa Sthalekar and Matt Hayden will be joined by Australian and Indian diplomatic counterparts as well as representatives from Cricket NSW from the UTS Cricket Lab to discuss the role and economic impact of major league sports on the world of today and tomorrow.

The CricketersLisa Sthalekar – Australian cricket commentator, and former cricketer and captain of the Australian women’s national cricket team. She was a right-handed all-rounder who bowled off-spin, and was rated as the leading all-rounder in the world when rankings were introduced. Sthalekar is the first woman cricketer to score 1,000 runs and take 100 wickets in One Day Internationals
Matt Hayden – Australian cricket commentator, former international cricketer and coach. He is widely considered to be one of the best opening batsmen in Test cricket history and holds the record of highest individual score by an Australian batsman, where he scored 380 against Zimbabwe during Zimbabwe's 2003 tour of Australia.
The DiplomatsRepresentative for Consul General of India (Sydney) – The Consul General of India in Sydney is the selected Indian Government representative for NSW and South Australia regarding all issues to do with trade and investment and partnership between Australian and Indian industry groups including government, private sector and university.
Australian High Commission Sarah Storey – Storey is the Deputy Head of Mission representing Australia in India. The Australian High Commission in New Delhi is the most important point for political and economic cooperation, trade and investment promotion, and cultural interaction on the ground in India facilitating bilateral engagement between the two nations of Australia and India.
The CollaboratorsCricket NSW, Chris Muldoon – Muldoon is the head of strategic operations for Cricket NSW. Cricket NSW is the State led cricket entity supporting professional men’s and women’s cricket players and competitions. Cricket NSW supplies 50% of the players to the Australian men’s and women’s national teams. In additional to supporting professional men’s and women’s codes, Cricket NSW contributes to significant projects addressing health, community, youth development, and female engagement.
UTS Cricket Lab, Mark Watsford and Glenn Wightwick – Watsford is a distinguished sports scientist at UTS and a researcher with the UTS Cricket Lab. Wightwick is the UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Enterprise and a key negotiator in the establishment of the UTS Cricket Lab. The UTS Cricket Lab is research based facility at UTS uniting the areas of health and exercise rehabilitation; biomechanics and technological innovation; and social cohesion and equity in Australian communities. The UTS Cricket Lab is in partnership with Cricket NSW Wales to deliver the most impactful outcomes for society and community through sport.
