Abstract: In this seminar Dr Kennedy will provide a short overview of his work on business sustainability. He will offer the topic areas that he is active in researching and provide a window into some of his recent works. Next, Dr Kennedy will introduce a proposed new study investigating organizational responses to ecological adversity. Organizations respond to ecological adversity differently. Extant studies have offered that firms can react in ways that prioritize preserving current organizational functioning over the health of the wider social-ecological system and wellbeing of other actors. For instance, faced with natural resource shortages firms may seek to maintain or increase acquisition. Firms may find these responses effective in the short-term, yet in the longer term raise levels of ecological adversity faced. Yet, other firms engage in actions to transform their operations and reduce levels of ecological adversity faced in the future. The proposed study aims to investigate the breadth of organizational responses and what determines the choice of firms using resilience thinking as a theoretical lens. Faculty input to the study design is warmly welcomed. Paper is not available for this presentation.
