China from a Hong Kong perspective
The Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology Sydney welcomed Ivan Chu, Chairman of John Swire & Sons (China) to give a view of China from a Hong Kong perspective. Mr Chu discussed developments in the Pearl River Delta including bridge and rail projects; the Belt and Road Initiative and what it means for rail links between China and London; and the notion of the Euro-Asian Century, as opposed to the Pacific Century. He dealt with China’s capacity to re-engineer and self-correct, and canvassed the success of the anti-corruption drive in underpinning Chinese President Xi Jinping’s popularity.
Following his presentation, Mr Chu was interviewed by Professor Bob Carr, ACRI Director, and participated in a Q&A session with the audience.

Ivan Chu
Ivan Chu joined the John Swire & Sons Limited (Swire) Group in 1984 and has worked with the group in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Thailand and Australia. He has been a Director of Cathay Pacific since March 2011 and a Director of John Swire & Sons (HK) Limited (JSSHK) and Swire Pacific since March 2014. He served as Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Pacific from March 2011 to March 2014 and has served as Chief Executive of Cathay Pacific since March 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of Hong Kong and a Master of Commerce degree from the University of New South Wales.
