Innovation and environmental sustainability in China
The Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) welcomed John Mathews, a leading scholar on the greening of capitalism and the role that China and East Asian countries are playing in this process. Professor Mathews was joined by Professor Bruce McKern to discuss renewables, the transition to renewable energies in China and the institutional changes needed to provide industrial capitalism with long-term sustainability. Professor Mathews currently holds a Chair in Strategic Management at Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Professor Bruce McKern is Adjunct Professor at the UTS Business School.
Professor Mathews presented a talk, followed by a discussion with Professor McKern, and a Q&A session with the audience.

John Mathews
John Mathews is Professor of Strategy at Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Macquarie University, Sydney. From 2009 to 2012 he held concurrently the Eni Chair of Competitive Dynamics and Global Strategy at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome. He has specialised in catch-up strategies of firms and countries in East Asia, publishing widely in this field. For the past several years Professor Mathews has focused on the greening of industry with an emphasis on the role of China. His article ‘Manufacture renewables to build energy security’ was published in Nature in September 2014 (coauthored with Hao Tan). In 2015 his book Greening of Capitalism: How Asia is Driving the Next Great Transformation, was published by Stanford University Press. He had a new book published in late 2015 by Palgrave Pivot, China’s Renewable Energy Revolution and its Global Significance, also coauthored with Dr Hao Tan. In 2016 Professor Mathews and Dr Tan published a second article in Nature on China’s circular economy and its lessons. In 2017 Professor Mathews’ new book, Global Green Shift was published by Anthem Press in London, with a web page created for the book: www.globalgreenshift.org.
Bruce McKern
Professor Bruce McKern is Adjunct Professor at the UTS Business School. Until 2014 he was Professor of International Business at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and former Co-Director of the CEIBS Centre on China Innovation. While Co-Director of the CEIBS Centre on China Innovation he undertook a major three-year research project on innovation in China. The findings of that research project are presented in his co-authored book China’s Next Competitive Advantage: From Imitation to Innovation (MIT Press, 2016). He has recently been a Visiting Research Fellow at the Technology & Management Centre for Development (2015) and the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford (2016) and previously at INSEAD (2015). He was for six years Director of the Stanford Sloan Master's Program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business; President and Professor of International Business at the Carnegie Bosch Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, and Visiting Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford.
