Recent developments in China's economy
On August 18 2017, the Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) hosted a roundtable on recent developments in China's economy.
ACRI's visiting scholars Dr Liu Yan, Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the Department of International Economics and Trade at the School of International Business, Dalian Minzu University and Dr Wang Ke, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Engineering Management at the School of Management and Economics, Beijing Institute of Technology were joined by Ms Diane Hu, Assistant Professor at the School of English and International Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University.
The scholars presented papers discussing the quality of China’s product exports and its determinants, China’s soon to be released nation-wide carbon emissions trading scheme, and recent overseas direct investment regulations in China and their implications for Australia. Their presentations were followed by a roundtable discussion.

Dr Liu Yan
Dr Liu Yan is currently an Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the Department of International Economics and Trade at the School of International Business, Dalian Minzu University. He was previously a visiting scholar of Texas A&M University. His current research interests include export product quality and its determinants, and the trade relationship between members of ASEAN+6. He is the Principal Investigator of a research project supported by China’s Social Science Fund. Dr Liu has published a number of peer-reviewed articles on China’s export product quality, the effect of intellectual property protection on high quality exports, and the selection of China FTA partner countries.
Dr Wang Ke
Dr Wang Ke is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Engineering Management at the School of Management and Economics, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). He is also the Director of the Research Division for Energy Modelling and System Development at the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research at BIT. Dr Wang was previously a visiting research scholar at the University of Illinois and University of Michigan. His research interests include efficiency and productivity measurement, benchmarking, energy economics and climate policy modelling. He is the Principal Investigator of research projects including grants of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, China CDM Fund, and World Bank China Energy Efficiency Financing Project. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in the field of energy economics and climate economics, management science and operations research.
Ms Diane Hu
Ms Diane Hu teaches Australian economy and its relations with China, Legal Translation, Interpretation and other BA and MA courses at the School of English and International Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University. She has been undertaking research on China-Australia relations, especially on the economic front. Her PhD thesis, which is to be completed, examines China's investment in Australia during the Labor government and the latter's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy and approach towards China. More recently she has focused on FDI and wine exports.
