This project explored the possibilities for an algae-based bioplastics industry in rural NSW. Literature on scenario planning and innovation in the bioeconomy was analysed for broad context. In parallel, experts in algae biotechnology, wastewater treatment, the government funding landscape, and regional industry stakeholders were interviewed to obtain more specific insights. The research findings were synthesised in collaboration with a visual communications designer and presented in an innovative interactive website, which visualised what an algae-based bioplastics industry might look like using wastewater from agricultural operations such as dairy farms, regional manufacturing, and community wastewater. The project has been shared widely among the algae biotechnology industry, attracting the interest of essential stakeholders in rural food production and manufacturing. It has been praised for showcasing the innovation that can occur when scientists and designers work together.
The research team is currently seeking to partner with regional stakeholders for a feasibility study.
