Disability Discrimination and Reproductive Rights seminar
The Law | Health | Justice Seminar, Disability Discrimination and Reproductive Rights addressed the disability ground for termination in the UK Abortion Act 1967 and considered the current challenge to this provision by the disability activist, Heidi Crowter.
The seminar was led by Professor Sally Sheldon of the University of Kent and UTS and Professor Deborah Bateson of the University of Sydney and UTS.
Both addressed the problems created by aging regulatory frameworks, and considered the current state of abortion law, the rights of disabled people, and reproductive rights, in the UK and Australia.
The speakers explored why change is necessary and the different experiences of change. Discussion also addressed the common ground between disability and reproductive rights activists, and the broader question of training and behavioural change within health professionals.
