UTS FASS at Mardi Gras Film Festival 2023
The love story between UTS FASS and Queer Screen MGFF continues in 2023 with Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI) joining us in this year's partnership.
Mark your calendar for Wednesday 15th February to Thursday 2nd March.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI) at UTS are proudly partnering with Queer Screen’s Mardi Gras Film Festival for another year.
This will be an even more-massive-than-usual celebration of LGBTIQ+ art, culture and storytelling, with Queer Screen presenting the 30th Mardi Gras Film Festival, which will also coincide with Sydney WorldPride 2023!
UTS filmmakers, both from within the LGBTQI+ community and their supporters, have had a long history of producing outstanding films that celebrate and champion queer voices and stories. Some familiar names include alumni Maya Newell and Charlotte Mars (Gayby Baby), Tony Krawitz (Dead Europe), Bonnie Elliott (Sistergirl) and Craig Boreham (Teenage Kicks).
Over the years, MGFF has screened countless UTS FASS alumni films. Recent acclaimed works include Birds of the Borderlands by Afghanistan-based filmmaker Jordan Bryon, Lingua Franca co-produced by Australian-Filipino producer Carlo Velayo, What Do You See? by FASS media arts lecturer Margaret McHugh and Becoming Colleen by Head of the UTS Animal Logic Academy Ian Thomson.
Fans of the 2022 Sydney Film Festival opening film Here Out West might note the creative contribution of FASS MGFF alums Fadia Abboud (Concern for Welfare, In The Ladies Lounge), Vonne Patiag (Tomgirl) and Bina Bhattacharya (Wild Dances) who have explored facets of the intersectionality of queerness and sexual identity in their work.
Let us know if you are one of FASS's filmmakers who have had your works screened at Mardi Gras Film Festival. Contact fass.engagement@uts.edu.au.
