What to do if you don’t get your dream ATAR?
Let’s talk about the ATAR. Sometimes it’s better than you expect and sometimes it is worse. All the time, it is difficult to predict. So what happens when your ATAR isn’t what you expected? Here are our top tips and tricks for figuring out a plan B…
1. Don’t stress
Your parents, older siblings and the next door neighbour probably told you that your ATAR doesn’t define you. But when you’re in the final years of school, it can really feel like it does. We’re here to let you know that actually, they’re right. Your ATAR doesn’t define you. While it might make getting into certain university courses easier, it is definitely not the only way in.
Our first tip? Take a deep breath, relax and have a look at your other options (and there are plenty!).
2. UTS Pathways
A great option is to enrol into another UTS undergraduate degree with a lower selection rank. After one year of full time study, you can reapply to UTS via UAC. The best bit? UAC will look at your first year uni results, and your Year 12 marks, and assess you on the more competitive of the two. You may also be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning if you complete similar subjects.
Still need a boost? UTS College might be for you! You’ll be able to dive into your second year of a UTS degree when you complete a higher education diploma at UTS College. With diplomas in engineering, business, communication, science and more, you’ll be ready to go.
3. External Pathways
But wait, there’s more! Attending TAFE or a private college and completing an AQF Diploma can prepare you to re-apply to your preferred UTS degree. We recommend doing a graded diploma (where you get graded) as this will make you more competitive in your application.
Another great option is to do a Tertiary Preparation Certification (TPC) or foundation studies program. These will prepare you for life at uni and help you put your best foot forward when re-applying to UTS.
It’s pretty clear that the ATAR isn’t everything, and it isn’t your only way into uni. If you want to chat about your pathway options, you can speak to our future students team.
