James Miotto
Life working as a graduate is absolutely amazing.
When James chose to study Law in 2014, he did so because he wanted the flexibility to choose his career and was up for a challenge. James notes that his time at UTS has provided him with exactly that. He believes that being inquisitive and passionate throughout his time at university has set him up for his early career as a Graduate Lawyer.
Whilst studying at UTS, James took advantage of the many opportunities that UTS Law has on offer, from attending First Year Law Camp to competing in negotiation competitions. He says that UTS “gave me a useful foundation to build from whilst working in the legal space”.
“Competing in the UTS Negotiation competition has not only given me some insight into what was to come, but has also helped build the confidence to operate effectively in a team at a law firm.”
Since graduating from UTS in 2020, James has been working as a Graduate Lawyer at leading commercial law firm, Norton Rose Fulbright, and is currently assisting the firm’s Mergers and Acquisitions Team. His day to day work ranges from legal research and general contract review to assisting with warranty and indemnity insurance for M&A transactions.
“Life working as a graduate is absolutely amazing – I’ve been given the opportunity to rotate through practice groups, experience an array of work and work with some very talented lawyers.”
When asked about his advice for future law students, James says to get involved with all of the opportunities that present themselves at university and develop networks with other students early. He attributes much of his involvement to the UTS Law Students’ Society who facilitate a breadth of opportunities such as networking nights, competitions and social events.
“Law is not a spectator sport – it pays dividends being involved, whether that’s academically or socially. Never knock an opportunity and remember that there is a strong support network (friends and UTS) that you can draw on.”
For the new students starting at UTS, James says that he “absolutely recommends Law Camp for first years – it gives you a chance to meet new students in your cohort which can set you up for a much more enjoyable uni experience.”
