The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of Australia’s leading research schools in civil and environmental engineering.
Welcome to the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Message from the Head of School
I am proud to lead a school and work with colleagues who are passionate about teaching and their research in environmental and civil engineering. I aim to promote an atmosphere in the school where we forge a strong sense of belonging with of our daily activities and interactions. Fundamentally we remain committed to our students and creating ground-breaking research that has impact in Australia and around the world. Together we strive to maintain a safe work environment where we appreciate diversity and inclusion, recognise individual contribution and achievements, value collaboration and good citizenship.
Our School delivers practical and industry-connected education to ensure our graduates are work-ready, highly demanded by employers and positive contributors to our society. We offer a range of undergraduate programs including a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering. We also offer a range of postgraduate programs for those wanting to further their studies. These programs include a Master of Engineering or Graduate Certificate where you can study civil, environmental, geotechnical, structural and water engineering. We also offer research degrees including a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Engineering (Research) . Our programs are designed to provide students with practice-oriented degrees that are well connected with industry to ensure our graduates are ready for their future careers in the Engineering industry. Our graduates are employed in a wide range of areas including the construction, transport and engineering industries, consulting, government agencies and departments, research, and education.
CEE delivers research excellence in several areas in the fields of civil and environmental engineering. The school’s research strengths and identity are in the following 6 areas:
→ Resilient Infrastructures
→ Smart Transport
→ Sustainable Materials
→ Wastewater Technology and Water Resources
→ Green Energy

Our researchers are highly cited by Clarivate and by Mendeley (Stanford), elected fellows of learnt academies and societies, editors of flagship research and professional journals, and contributors to standards, codes, and policy documents. The School hosts some of the most prestigious fellowships sponsored by the Australian Research Council (ARC) including 6 Future Fellows (4 current) and 11 Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRA) (8 current). The school delivers world-leading research in civil and environmental engineering, and we will continue to grow and expand our research profile in line with the school’s strategic plans.
Our School is proud to be associated with industry and academic partners who support us in many ways. These include the delivery of guest lectures in our teaching, contributing to our professional advisory board meetings, providing work placements to our students, offering awards and career opportunities to our graduates, and collaborating on research projects. Our partners play an integral role in the school, and they are all significant and important to us. We are grateful for their support and contribution to the school’s activities, and we welcome future partners to reach out and see how we can collaborate on future initiatives. Please feel free to attend one of our events, visit us at our city campus (located in Broadway) or book a tour of our innovative Tech Lab facility at Botany.
