While many students look to the end of their undergraduate degree as a welcomed reprieve from study, for Natasha Madan it was a chance to enhance her skillset and follow her passion through postgraduate study.
During my undergraduate studies, I majored in International Relations and Government. I learnt a lot about issues facing marginalised communities including women, people with disabilities and Indigenous communities I found these subjects incredibly fascinating and knew I wanted to develop the skills and knowledge to address these issues in the real world.. Postgraduate study through the Juris Doctor (JD) seemed like the perfect fit.
The current JD student has enjoyed the way law is taught at UTS, sharing the most valuable part for students is how they are continually encouraged to consider how the law impacts different groups.
“UTS’s commitment to understanding how the law affects different communities is what attracted me to the university. From Civil Law and Procedure where we analysed Indigenous access to justice, to Tort Law where we evaluated new case law on police owing a duty of care to victims of domestic violence. We study the law with fresh perspectives to truly understand the way the law works.”
And luckily, Natasha doesn’t have to wait to reap the rewards of her postgrad study, with much of what she has learnt having real life application in her current role as a paralegal working in civil litigation.
“Subjects such as Introduction to Property and Commercial Law, Civil Procedure and Torts have helped me immensely in my current role as a paralegal in Civil Litigation at Deutsch Miller. My assignments for these subjects included research memorandums, case notes and writing letters to a senior partner. These are real things I do at my firm, so practising and perfecting these skills has helped me so much.”
While Natasha may not know exactly where she wants her career in law to lead, she knows keeping her options open and exploring different legal roles will benefit her career in the industry.
“In terms of my future career, I am still deciding and I’m learning that’s okay. I am interested in both corporate law and dispute resolution, and am looking for roles where I can be supported to understand where my passions and strengths lie."
