Bachelor of Sound and Music Design
What motivated you to study this course at UTS ?
I always knew I wanted to do something with music and this course lets me merge my interests in music and technology. I chose UTS because it's the first and only uni to introduce a course like this. The type of music I was most interested in wasn't covered in any other course or at the Conservatorium of Music (and I probably wouldn't have gotten in with my turntable or tape loops).
What do you most enjoy about your course?
The networking. I’ve only been in the course a year, but I feel like I’ve accomplished so much. Not only with the studies, but also by playing at concerts, feedback on my own music, developing a new train of thought and trying to get my own stuff out there. Subject-wise, you learn about aspects of music that you didn't think existed, and how to create new types of music through technology.
You’ve done some volunteer work with NIME (New Interfaces for Musical Expression). What do they do?
It’s where researchers and musicians from all over the world gather to share their knowledge and late-breaking work on new musical interface design. While there I saw many different perceptions of music and different interfaces or ways to perform it. From a motion sensor triggered drum-kit that played distorted/ glitched snares, to a cello that resonated to the musician’s neural patterns, it showcased interesting and thought provoking ways of what music can be and how it can be achieved.
Film Production, Music Production, or a Musician. There’s also a whole bunch of other fields you can go into, especially to do with new media.
