UTS Alumni Human Rights Award
Dixie Link-Gordon
Diploma in Adult Education in Aboriginal Education (1992), Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education and Community Management (2010)
In 2004, a violent sexual assault by a known heroin dealer took place in Redfern which prompted the local community to take a stand. A rally drew 100 people who set about publicly shaming those responsible. Not only did this result in the alleged rapist leaving the area but it also created the Blackout Violence Campaign conceptualised by Dixie Link-Gordon. This campaign is designed to inform assault victims of their rights but also to educate offenders.
This is just one of the many campaigns that Dixie has been involved in that address the issue of violence in Aboriginal communities in inner-Sydney and throughout NSW. Others include The Redfern Waterloo Family Violence Taskforce,
The Inner-City Domestic Violence Action Group, as well as a NSW state-wide campaign entitled "Tackling Violence" - an initiative raising awareness of the problem of domestic violence through sport.
As a survivor of violence herself, Dixie has worked tirelessly to protect families affected by violence and to help ensure that everyone in her community can feel safe.
