This degree, while challenging, was incredibly rewarding
I have always been fascinated by true crime stories, documentaries, and podcasts. Prior to this degree, I completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney in Science (Anatomy) and Arts (Archaeology and Ancient History). I believed forensic science was the perfect blend of my passion for both science and arts as well as my interest in true crime.
As I was nearing the completion of my undergraduate degree, I was unsure as to what I wanted to do. I enrolled in a subject called ‘Forensic Anthropology’ and found myself absolutely enthralled by it. Completing this subject led me to consider furthering my studies in forensic science and I found that UTS offered a fantastic forensic science program where I could pursue my growing interest in this field.
I am passionate about giving a voice to those who are not able to be heard, and I found forensic science is the perfect occupation to be able to do this.
I chose UTS as it offers one of the best forensic science programs available in Australia. It is taught by some of the leading experts in the field.
Studying forensic science at UTS has definitely changed me. My honours year was especially profound. I had the opportunity to work alongside fingerprint experts at the NSW Police Force who mentored and guided me. In addition to them, I was taught by incredibly knowledgeable experts and researchers. All of which have helped to shape the way I process problems and view situations. I have definitely grown as a person and have gained invaluable skills which have already proven to be useful.
A highlight during my studies was meeting my incredibly wonderful partner, Gill. We met in my second year of study at UTS. In addition to this, I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to work closely with fingerprint experts at the NSW Police Force for the duration of my honours component of my degree. They provided immeasurable advice and knowledge to my project, making my time doing honours the highlight of my entire tertiary education.
I was accepted, alongside my partner Gill, into the NSW Police Force’s Accelerated Program. We’ll be working within the Forensic Evidence and Technical Services Command Unit. I was accepted into Fingerprint Operations and my partner, Gill for Crime Scene Investigation. We are both excited to have been given the opportunity to pursue our passion for forensic science.
This degree, while challenging, was incredibly rewarding. It offers the best of both worlds; an opportunity to improve your theoretical and practical knowledge in forensic science as well as develop your taste for research.
I know everyone probably says this, but network! Connect with as many people as you can: join clubs, attend events! Some of my closest friends, and partner, were fellow students I met through my studies. They help you get through stressful periods and they are there with you to celebrate your wins.
