My studies have made me a more confident person and have opened my eyes to so much new knowledge
I grew up in western Sydney with my mum, my younger sister and my maternal grandparents. My mother migrated to Australia from China before I was born. Throughout primary and high school I didn’t really have many good friends. In the early years of high school, I wasn’t too great at studying and felt like I didn’t have much going for me. In year 11 I became very focused on my studies, and it really paid off for me. I was hooked on that feeling when I was ranking first in Biology in my cohort. That’s when I realised that biology was what I wanted to pursue in uni.
I watched a lot of CSI dramas growing up and throughout most of year 11 and 12 and was set on doing forensic science. I saw that UTS had a degree for forensic science, so I attended the open day and discovered the Biomedical Science course. I enjoyed learning aspects of medical science in Biology during the HSC. I really had to reflect for a long time on what degree was right for me. In the end I chose Biomedical Science. I choose this degree because of the diverse possible career paths available and because of the exposure to the field I had from studying biology for the HSC.
I am passionate about using my strengths and knowledge to help other people. I love haematology, histology, microbiology and public health. Aside from my studies, I am also passionate about the environment and reducing my impact on the Earth.
In terms of co-curriculars, in first year I discovered my knack for planning events when I became a first-year representative for the UTS Medical and Health Society, on their Events team. Last year I was elected as the Events Director. This was a challenge we couldn’t hold on campus events for most of the year and had to get really creative! In the end we held more than 20 events. One of our online events had 44 attendees! More recently I was elected as the President of the Medical and Health Society. I love watching our events come to life. Being able to interact with my fellow students in such a unique way is a very rewarding experience.
I like the vibe of the people at UTS. When I was visiting the campus on open day, I felt that I fit in with the culture and the people. The students were really nice and non-judgemental. I was also impressed by the University's rankings, and I like that travelling to campus is easy.
A highlight of my studies was going to Science Camp! Meeting new people and getting introduced to uni life was a great experience. I made a lot of friends while bonding over classic games and activities.
Recently, I took Haematology over the summer session, and it was amazing! The content was engaging and interesting. The practicals were fun and helpful, and the 3 week block format allowed me to easily focus my studies on the one subject.
My studies have made me a more confident person and they have opened my eyes to so much new knowledge. I have had so many unique and insightful experiences, from learning to identify cellular structures using online slides in Histology to conducting investigations into food poisoning in Epidemiology and Public Health Microbiology. My degree has also helped me decide what area of biomedical science I would like to go on to work in.
