Robert Chen’s interest in the law began after a run in with an insurance company. When his insurer refused to pay a claim, the then-personal trainer started to read relevant legislation in an effort to help himself.
“I realised law really interested me,” he said.
“I found it enjoyable, and I could also see the benefit in it. I wanted to be able to help my family, as my parents lack the required level of English to stand up for their rights and protect themselves.”
In 2017 he graduated from UTS Law with a Juris Doctor with honours and he now works as a solicitor for HWL Ebsworth Lawyers.
Raised in Sydney’s western suburbs, Robert’s parents emigrated to Australia from China before he was born. He said their sacrifice made him appreciate the opportunity to study law and fuelled his desire to succeed.
“My parents studied at university in China, though their degrees basically became obsolete once they got to Australia,” he said. "I’m the first in my family to study law, and I felt as though it was incumbent on me to make something of my life here in Australia."
With a strong commitment to social justice, something he says stems from his Buddhist background, Robert spent more than 100 hours volunteering for the UTS Brennan Justice and Leadership program. This includes his participation in the inaugural Allens Neota UTS Law Tech Challenge for Social Justice. “I enjoy giving back to the community and making a difference in someone's day, even if the act is simple,” he said.
He said his long-term career aspirations include being “admitted to the bar” so he can be an advocate for those who need it most.
Joining a diverse community of successful global alumni, Robert said he would remember his time at UTS for its excellent culture.
“The people at UTS really come together from all backgrounds and genuinely develop friendships. That's the best part about UTS and what sets it apart from other universities,” he said.
“Many people I have met so far in a professional capacity have either graduated from or are studying at UTS. They all speak highly of their experiences at UTS and to the flexibility the university offers.”
