The opportunity to study & work alongside practising nurses with real patients is a great advantage.
Throughout school I really had a strong passion for Science – particularly Biology and Chemistry. I completed a Bachelor of Science at another university, however I found this was more research based and when thinking about my future career I knew I wanted it to be focused more on person-to-person interactions, rather than behind a lab bench.
I started to consider nursing when I had a close personal loss within my family. Although it was tough, it gave me the opportunity to see just how hands-on nurses are in the clinical space. It really was a shifting point in my life and career. I hope to provide the same kind of care to other families as a future nurse.
"I am passionate about empowering people to take charge of their health. Health is such an important component of our lives and has a huge impact on how we feel each day."
I knew of several people who completed their degree at UTS and had nothing but positive things to say about their experience with the university. UTS also offers a lot of postgraduate opportunities in case I wish to further my undergraduate nursing degree. It seemed like the natural choice for me.
The clinical placements will always be a highlight of my degree. To be given the opportunity to study and work alongside practising nurses with real patients is a great advantage to transition into a new graduate role.
It’s without a doubt studying this degree has changed me. Nursing helps you challenge preconceived notions and gives you further insight into yourself. It has helped me to become a more compassionate and caring person, which I feel are important qualities when becoming a nurse.
What are my plans for the future? Gosh, there are so many avenues for the future! I’ve considered doing a postgraduate midwifery course to become experienced in both fields. However, I think to just make it through my new graduate year will be a huge achievement on its own. I eventually hope to specialise in trauma and emergency nursing, but that may change as I am exposed to new areas through the degree.
To anyone thinking about studying nursing, the course content in the Bachelor of Nursing is delivered excellently. Each subject ties into each other really well and you’ll find there is a good flow of learning that you can achieve. The university support is immense – we have UPASS and academic writing services to assist if you find you are struggling and need the extra hand. The friendships you make will last a lifetime, and you will learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible.
