Alicia Wood
"Learning to speak Spanish has opened up foreign career options"
Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Journalism) Master of Arts in International Studies
Alicia Wood attributes her career success to being “relentless and annoying,” but it certainly has more to do with her versatility and interest in global affairs. With an internship at the Sydney Morning Herald and at Chile’s Santiago Times under her belt, and currently working at the Sun Herald and St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, you’d think that her career highlights were summed up already.
This isn’t the case. In 2009, Alicia’s networking skills, ability to speak Spanish and international experience helped her land a plum position working as a radio journalist for the United Nations at the General Assembly in New York. She says meeting Barack Obama, attending a Kevin Rudd stakeout and high-fiving Hugo Chavez are her career highlights.
When asked how her International Studies degree has helped shape her career, Alicia replies, “It made a huge difference in helping me stand out amongst other journalism graduates. In an industry as competitive as this, anything that differentiates you is a plus. Learning to speak Spanish has opened up foreign career options; I hope to eventually move to Latin America to do aid work.”
