Uni Mythbusters
Think you know university? Think again. Here, we bust five common myths about studying at university
If you haven’t studied it in high school, you can’t study it at uni
It can be hard to know what you want to study at uni when you’re still at school. UTS courses have no prerequisites, meaning if you haven’t studied it during high school, you can still study it at university. And if you’re feeling a bit concerned, you can always take one of our bridging courses.
Full time uni means full time
When you think of university, you might imagine your schedule will look something like it did in high school. Think again. At UTS, we realise uni is a unique time in your life and you should be able to explore and experience everything on offer, whether it’s learning another language, doing an internship, or joining a student club or society. With flexible subject timetabling, you can have the best of both worlds.
Once you’ve chosen your degree, you’re stuck with it
Choosing a degree can be tricky, especially when there are so many options. All our courses are designed to be flexible, so you can move around if you find your interests are pulling you in a different direction. In our Bachelor of Business for example, you’ll spend your first-year trialling all of the majors before you choose the one you want to focus on.
Classes are large and formal
Perhaps the biggest myth about university is that classes are large, formal and your tutors write on blackboards. Our courses are made up of seminars, workshops, tutorials, industry lectures and even labs, meaning you get to experience a range of different classroom settings. And your lecturers and tutors are always there to help and to provide personalised feedback.
You’re a small fish in a big pond
Starting uni can be daunting. However, with over 130 different clubs and societies hosting first year camps, trivia nights and buddy programs, you’re bound to find some like-minded friends. And if you do encounter a few speedbumps in your journey, there are plenty of services available at UTS for you to use.
