I chose UTS because I believe they have the best forensic science program
I’ve always been passionate about science. It was my favourite subject as school, along with history which was why I first studied both Science (Anatomy) and Arts (Acient History) at another university. When I finished my bachelor’s degree, I wanted to continue my studies in science and I fascinated with forensic science. I decided to enrol into the Master of Forensic Science at UTS and then I decided to further my studies with a Master of Philosophy in Forensic Science.
Crime dramas and forensic fiction inspired me to continue my studies in forensic science. Shows like NCIS, Forensic Files and the Kay Scarpetta book series were some of my favourites to spend time with when I was younger. Looking back, I’ve come to see how real forensics is when compared to the dramatized version depicted on TV. And because of this, my love and curiosity about it has grown even more.
I chose UTS for my postgraduate studies because I believe they have the best forensic science program. This is reflected by the quality of the subjects available for students and the variety of topics that are offered to research students such as chemistry, ballistics, genetics, toxicology and more. I’ve also found my tutors and lecturers to be very open and approachable if I ever had any questions or concerns.
The pathway to research offered in the Master of Philosophy in Forensic Science was definitely an experience that stood out during my studies. I had the opportunity to research forensic genetics for a year as part of an independent research project. I definitely got to know more about myself as a person. Research changes you in ways you can only reflect on after it finishes and although I complained about it every minute of last year, I felt on top of the world when I handed in the thesis with my solution.
I’m now studying a PhD in forensic science. My PhD thesis is looking at a multidisiciplinary approach to the forensic examination of skulls which includes both an anoatomical and DNA perspective for identification of the skulls. The amazing experience I had with my master’s research degree was definitely a factor that influenced my decision to study a PhD.
My advice to future students is to never shy away from opportunity. As a university student, you realise there are so many opportunities to grab hold of and your next experience is only one email or quick chat away.
