Emma Cameron
Postgraduate law helped broaden my skill set including my analytical and problem-solving skills
‘If you’d asked me ten years ago what I would be doing in my future career, I would not have predicted that I’d be practising law.’
A lot has changed for Juris Doctor alumni Emma Cameron since she was a young Fine Arts and BA student majoring in French.
After graduating, her keen eye for design and fashion led to work as a buyer for a major Department Store but she had a yearning for more of an intellectual challenge:
‘I always found intellectual property interesting with respect to the rights of artists and designers so without any real intention of knowing or wanting to practise law, I enrolled in the JD at UTS.’
From the start, Emma was impressed with the range of subjects and electives on offer as well as the flexibility. For example, the repeat of core law subjects in the evening for students who worked during the day as well as the provision of online subjects and intensive summer classes.
Emma graduated in 2013 and is now working as a Senior Associate in Technology, Media and Telecommunications law with global law firm, Bird & Bird.
Her work includes advising technology businesses on their IP arrangements and she also does pro bono work with Australia's Arts Law Legal Centre, providing legal advice to artists, designers, musicians and writers.
‘UTS' legal curriculum equipped me with the foundational legal knowledge, research and analytical skills for a career in law. The interactive style of tutorials and online subject offerings also prepared me with communication and collaborative skills, required to do my job and work with clients and colleagues.’
