Orientation guide to the UTS campus
Joining us for Autumn session? Here's your overview of what's on offer to you at UTS.
With around 20 buildings spread across four inner-city suburbs, the UTS city campus can be a little overwhelming. But it won’t take long to work out how to find your classes, favourite study spots and the most ‘grammable locations.
We recommend taking a walk through each of our main buildings to see everything on offer. Generally, all buildings are open to all students, no matter what faculty you’re enrolled in.
But, of course, you want the cheat sheet. So here are our top tips for getting around and getting the most out of your campus.
Getting around campus
CB01 might sound like a forgotten Star Wars droid, but it’s actually the ‘official number’ for the UTS Tower (Building 1). All UTS buildings have these numbers.
CB stands for ‘city building’ and is used for main campus buildings (eg CB11, CB08). Buildings further away have different letters e.g. MP01 is the UTS building at Moore Park.
Most campus buildings have nicknames as well as official numbers and names. They’re often more widely used, so we suggest you get to know them!
You can locate buildings and other campus services like bubblers, cafes, bike parking and sports facilities using the maps function on the UTS app (Android or iPhone) or head to UTS Maps if you’re on a desktop.
COVID-19 safety
As usual, UTS continues to monitor and follow government guidelines and health advice. We continue to ask all staff and students to support us in maintaining the health and safety of our community. Please do not attend campus if you're feeling unwell or experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19.
Finding a room
UTS has room codes for every classroom, lab and lecture theatre. The code tells you the building number, floor level and room number.
The UTS Wayfinding site will let you pinpoint a room on a floor plan of the building. Just search by code.
Study spaces
Student lounges with a variety of benches, desks, armchairs and group tables are spread across most buildings. The best spaces have plenty of power points and USB charge points.
We suggest checking out UTS Central (Building 2) for some of the best study spots with a view, both inside and outside the Library. The underground levels of Building 11, levels 3-6 of the Tower and Building 10 lounges and computer labs also have lots of good study spaces. But everyone has their favourite – explore campus and find yours before classes start!
Bookable private study rooms are available in UTS Central (including inside the Library) and other campus buildings depending on where you’re enrolled. Find them and book them online via Library Room Bookings.

Food and drink
Bad news for your wallet, great news for your belly: cafes and takeaway places are all across campus. The UTS Central food court includes PappaRich, Sushi World, Mad Mex, Stock Market, The Little Roaster, Chatime, The Terrace Café and UTS icon Uni Bros, a kebab and pizza shop that offers sweet student deals.
Also just off Alumni Green are the Penny Lane Café (Building 11), Café 10 (Building 10) and Cornerstone Café (Building 7).
Elsewhere on campus, you can find Universal Café in Building 6 and Café 80 in Building 8.
Two campus bars are run by ActivateUTS. The Loft is just off Broadway, with a great courtyard for afternoons in the sun, while The Underground on level 3 of the Tower is currently open for club and other functions, and offers pool tables, arcade games and a stage for live events. They offer weekly specials (like $6 burgers!) Monday to Friday. UTS students get a 10% discount at both venues.
There are also plenty of great places to visit right near campus, including Spice Alley, Central Park, Chinatown, Darling Square and Broadway.
Kitchens and cool water
If you’re trying to save money, you’re in luck: most campus buildings have a kitchen area available to students. At a minimum, kitchens are fitted out with a microwave, a sink and a filtered water tap with instant boiling or chilled water, as well as plenty of bench space for food prep. Here are some of the best student kitchens on campus.
Most buildings have additional water bubblers and/or water bottle refill stations. Newer buildings have them on every floor. There are also a couple on Alumni Green. See the full list.
Find a space in the sun
Study best outdoors? We’ve got you. UTS may be a city university, but there’s plenty of space to catch some rays. Our ‘green heart’ Alumni Green includes the lawn, where deck chairs are available most days, as well as tables and chairs within the leafy gardens behind the Tower. There are also a couple of table tennis tables at the garden end – visit the ActivateUTS counter on level 3 of the Tower to borrow paddles and balls.
The UTS Library in Building 2 features two outdoor terraces, one overlooking Alumni Green and the other over Broadway, giving the option of sunshine-filled study breaks. Building 6 has two outdoor courtyards on level 4: one at the front of the Universal Café and the other tucked behind the UTS Gallery (walk past the gallery and turn left).
There's also The Goods Line, accessible from Building 6, which has plenty of seating and lawn to lie on, in sun and in shade.
Parks around campus include Prince Alfred Park, Victoria Park, Wentworth Park and the outdoor spaces at Central Park.
Stay safe on the roads
Our inner-city location means UTS is surrounded by busy roads. But it’s easy to stay safe if you stay aware as you travel around campus.
Heads Up UTS is a two-minute video with all the tips you need to stay safe. UTS preferred paths is a map of the safest and speediest routes across campus, which include the Harris St footbridge and The Goods Line where you can avoid major roads. You can pick up a printed copy from the Security desk on level 4 of Building 1.
And stay safe on campus
UTS Security patrols campus 24/7 and provide lots of services that will keep you feeling safe.
Find out about the night-time security escort service, emergency help points, lost property and more.
You can contact security when you’re on campus by dialling 6 from a campus phone, or 1800 249 559 from any phone. Or, you can visit the Security desk on level 4 of the Tower, near the main entry from Broadway.
In an emergency, always dial 000, whether you’re on or off campus.
