I’ve been able to have a positive impact on patients and help them in their journey to recovery.
I headed straight to university after graduating from Year 12 and completing my HSC in southwest Sydney. In my final few years of school, I knew that I wanted a career that involved helping and caring for people, but I didn’t know which path to go down to achieve that goal. After thinking about it carefully and doing my research, I realised the perfect way to fulfil that was to become a nurse. Then, as I began to take more of an interest in the idea, I discovered my true passion and desire to care for sick children – leading me toward a career in paediatric or neonatal nursing.
I knew that I wanted to attend UTS after visiting the campus and learning about what the course offered. The incredible modern facilities were also very impressive and they allow for nursing students like me to thrive and improve our learning in every way.
The most rewarding aspect is the way I’ve been able to have a positive impact on patients and help them in their journey to recovery. Receiving a heartfelt ‘thank you’ from a patient, or their family member, because your knowledge and skills helped them is the most rewarding gift I could ask for.
I really feel as though I have vastly grown in my confidence and ability to communicate with all sorts of people as a result of my studies. As a nurse, strong communication skills and demonstrating confidence in your clinical ability are vital aspects of providing excellent care to patients. I have also been lucky enough to represent the course as a Nursing Student Ambassador throughout my time here.
After I complete my graduate year as a Registered Nurse, I’m planning to pursue my passion in neonatal nursing, and I hope to eventually return to UTS to complete a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery.
My advice to future students would be to trust in your knowledge and skills that you gain throughout your time here. You may occasionally feel nervous or unsure of yourself while on placement, but just remember why you’re here and all of the goals you have achieved to get to this point, and then go out there and do your best with every opportunity that comes your way.
