You have the ability to make a real, positive difference to people.
I chose to study nursing because I come from a long line of nurses. I have seen my own Grandmother and Mother nurse for many years and I have so much respect for them. They committed years of dedication and study to this profession, which I hope to emulate going forward. Nursing is truly an admirable role because you have the ability to make a real, positive difference to people who may be experiencing the worst day of their lives.
I had previously studied at UTS and had thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Coming back here was interesting, as I was familiar with the university and knew my way around the campus and the various systems.
There is so much that I find rewarding about studying nursing at UTS. As a mature aged student, who is trying to balance a part-time job, full-time nursing study and a three-year-old, it can get crazy, and while there have been some very busy days, studying has been a worthwhile experience. One of the key highlights has been the opportunity to partake in a rural placement for Mental Health. The challenges of nursing in the rural context, as well as the ability to form therapeutic relationships with those undergoing a period of mental ill-health have been the most rewarding and fascinating aspects of the course so far.
Receiving the Dean’s Prize for Nursing was also very rewarding. There are so many fantastic students within the cohort, which is why I was shocked to receive the prize. It was very humbling to be recognised.
The best thing about nursing is the remarkable diversity of available roles. Every time you believe you know where you would like to go, another experience presents itself. For me, I am passionate about anatomy and physiology and how these contribute to the everyday duties we carry out as health professionals. However, there’s so many opportunities in nursing – so who knows what the future holds for me!
If you want to study nursing, or are currently studying it, I recommend that you seize every available opportunity. Whether it be a rural placement, justice health, volunteering or even working around campus with the university, there are no shortage of opportunities. I have had the chance to meet many amazing people, from students to academic staff, from engaging with activities where I could.
