11234, Architectural Design: Integration
'High Wall High' emerged out of a recognition that education has increasingly been streamlined. The shortening of teaching periods, lessening of student and teacher face to face time, and privileging of certain subjects and faculties over others, has led to an increasingly linear approach to education, a one-size-fits-all model.
‘High Wall High’ provides an alternative in which the arts thrive. A system of walls delineates the everyday activities of the school into distinct strips. Students are not restricted to one part of the school, or one trajectory in their education, instead the dispersed arrangement of uses encourages an interest based progression, at whatever speed best suits the user.
The walls themselves carry all of the main building services and distributes them where needed throughout the site.
This project won the 2016 Steensen Varming Third Year Design Prize.
