This studio was conceived in dialogue—between individuals, between remnant infrastructure and an imagined future, between the built fabric of the city and events that are facilitated within it. Students imagined a new Cité des Arts complex on the existing Domain sports fields and carpark site. The complex was to comprise of artist-in-residence studios, and an associated contemporary art foundation, including gallery space, performance/lecture theatre, outdoor public plaza, community library and research room, a bookshop, café and restaurant.
Proposals were required to maintain the existing carpark and sports fields, rethinking and working around them or incorporating them within the new proposed design. Additionally, a new train stop called Art Gallery Station was proposed on the existing Eastern Suburbs Rail Line between Martin Place and Kings Cross, adjacent to the site.
Student projects sought to understand how architects might contribute to meaningful place-making within the city, as well as the relationship between architecture and contemporary art exhibition and practice.
