Kitchen hot spots on campus
Kitchen facilities are available all across the UTS campus, so if you’re looking for a place to reheat last night’s leftovers or wash your keep cup, you won’t have to travel far.
At a minimum, each kitchen is fitted out with a microwave, a sink and a filtered water tap with instant boiling or chilled water. Most have plenty of bench space for food prep as well as nearby seating.
General access kitchens don’t have plates or cutlery available, so those are byo.
Here are some of the best student kitchen spaces. Remember: all students are welcome in all UTS buildings, regardless of where you're enrolled, so drop in and make use of any of these facilities!
The Tower, Level 3
Down the stairs from the main Tower lobby, this area is also known as the Tower concourse. Flanked by a wall of glowing vending machines, the kitchenette is really basic. But the ready access to a microwave, chilled water and a sink just off Alumni Green makes it a winner. It’s perfect for those days you want to picnic in the sun - or for late night study sessions in the Tower.
Building 8, Level 4
This kitchen is The Business. From the wood panelled finishes to the mood lighting to the shiny bespoke benchtop, it screams ‘designed by a world-renowned architect’. What’s more, it’s surrounded by heaps of student-friendly seating, including benches with a view over the Goods Line and cushy armchairs. One to keep in mind for a long leisurely lunch break.
Building 11, Level B1
Staying true to its location in the Engineering building, this kitchen is compact, orderly and highly functional. It’s within one of the most interesting student spaces on campus, affectionately known as The Ark because of its boat-like wooden structure filled with padded benches and group seating. It’s also right near a stack of lockers that can be hired by UTS students – the perfect storage location for chilli sauce and instant coffee. B1 is a basement level, so take the escalators down underground to find it.
Rugby Australia Building at Moore Park, Level 5
UTS students who have classes at Moore Park have access to one of the nicest kitchens on campus. The building has only been open since late 2017, so everything is still shiny and new. The kitchen is perfectly located on the top floor, with views over Paddington and the CBD, as well as access to the roof terrace (which features a rooftop running track!). Moore Park also features lots of great study spaces and there’s a regular free shuttle bus from outside the Tower – so it’s well worth a trip to study in style.
Building 6, Level 3
We love this kitchen because it reminds us of every share house we’ve ever visited. Nothing matches, everything looks borrowed or ‘adopted’ from a back lane, and the shelves are completely empty of useful grocery items. Fortunately, it doesn’t rely on a share house cleaning roster, so it’s a lot cleaner than actual share-house kitchens. It’s located right next to a small student lounge area with brightly coloured chairs and hipster DAB students on their Macs.
Building 5A, Level 1
Truly the VW of kitchens: compact, no fuss, a little outdated but ready to go when you need it. This ‘island-style’ kitchen is hidden in the far, far, far reaches of building 5B, near the outdoor seating on Darling Drive (no, we had no idea there was outdoor seating on Darling Drive either). If you haven’t visited this part of campus, make time for a visit. There are some excellent student lounge and study spaces, including a sky-themed room with blue curtains that can be drawn around group tables, and lots of extra amenities.
Building 11, Level 4
This little gem is tucked away in a back corner at the Jones St end of the building. It’s everything you want in a short-term relationsh... we mean, kitchen: neat, discreet and all the essential items appear to be working. It doesn’t have the cool design of the B1 kitchen down at The Ark – but it does have its own dedicated seating area with natural sunlight and views of Broadway.
