Lace Narratives: A Monograph explores new ways to disseminate practice-based research through the co-existence of digital and print technologies. It documents Cecilia Heffer’s contemporary lace-making practice over the period of 2005-2015. The publication includes four key essays on solo exhibitions, public and private commissions such as the Sydney Government House Lace Curtain commission and includes two guest essays. It presents an in-depth reflection on studio practice in a discursive spirit and reveals a trajectory of innovative textile research. The monograph evolved out of a two-year collaboration with Dr Zoë Sadokierski and Dr Chris Caines. Lace Narratives: A Monograph contributes to an expanded field of textile practice that opens access to individual practice through global online communities and social media. It offers a holistic understanding of practice-led research and material output. The publication was funded by UTS Library and UTS ePress; a seven-minute film documenting the lace process accompanies the monograph. A limited edition of artist’s books embedded with original lace works sit alongside the online publication and have been acquired by the Library of Victoria, Queensland and the State Libraries, Parsons School of Design New York and Nottingham Lace Museum, UK. The film was screened at the Textiles and Place Conference, Manchester School of Art and Design in 2018. The research has also been adopted by the Royal College of London for its master’s programme, as well as by UTS academics.
